5558 Kamiyoshida, Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi 403-0005, Japan
Sengen are Shinto shrines specifically dedicated to the kami (spirit) of Mount Fuji, Princess Konohanasakuya. Fujiyoshida, previously called Kitaguchi Hongū Fuji, is one of the largest, and, as a site, dates back almost 1900 years. This elaborate temple complex is approached through a dense grove of cedar trees, along a path lined with ancient stone lanterns. The main hall’s beautiful wood panelling and ornate artwork are well worth a look, particularly if you enjoy traditional Japanese culture. Visiting works well as part of a Mount Fuji day trip – you can start your ascent of the mountain at Fujiyoshida, and continue up via the Yoshida Trailhead.
