1138-24 Kakegawa, Shizuoka 436-0079, Japan
Kakegawa Castle was first constructed in 1513; although most of the original building was destroyed across the years, it has since been restored using traditional techniques. Visitors can explore both the tenshukaku (keep) and goten (palace), which feature displays of antique samurai weaponry, as well as relics such as gilt human skulls, which were used as money boxes. The castle’s hilltop position means it also has great views of the surrounding landscape, so keep your camera handy!
