Naganomotoyoshichō, Nagano, 380-0851, Japan
Zenkō-ji Temple is one of Nagano’s most unique attractions. Constructed in the seventh century, it houses a hibutsu, or ‘secret Buddha’, which is rumoured to be the first Buddha image ever brought to Japan. The temple’s Buddhist creed prohibits this statue from being shown to anyone, but the Gokaichō ceremony, held once every six years, allows the public to see a replica. Visitors can walk beneath the towering Niomon Gate, explore the Main Hall, or pay a small fee to access the sacred inner chamber. The onsite Zenkō-ji History Museum is also great for expanding your understanding of Japanese Buddhist culture.
