481 Otaki, Isumi District, Chiba 298-0216, Japan
The northern counterpoint to Tateyama Castle, Ōtaki Castle was also part of the Bōsō Peninsula’s 1500s defence system. Neglect during the 1600s meant that the modern reiteration of Ōtaki Castle is actually a reconstruction, built in the 1970s. Visitors can explore the four-storey tenshukaku, which features history displays, samurai armour and weaponry, and even antique rifles. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during the September/October period, you might encounter the Ōtaki Castle Festival – watch as dozens of locals clad in samurai gear walk and ride past Ōtaki Elementary School.
