The Great Ocean Road, that magnificent route spanning hundreds of kilometres of coastline, begins at Torquay, and it’s a starting point that makes sense. Torquay is Victoria’s surf capital, the birthplace of global brands like Ripcurl and Quicksilver, and embodies the laidback spirit of Australia’s beautiful south. If you’re a surfer, swimmer or connoisseur of stunning landscapes, Torquay should be high up on your list of must-visit holiday destinations.
As most surfing devotees will know, the town is renowned for its borderline obsession with hitting the waves. 1969 saw the rise of Ripcurl and Quicksilver, two tiny Aussie companies that went on to dominate the global surfing industry and mark Torquay as one of the great surfing locations. Get your boardies and bikinis on at Surf City Plaza, a commercial precinct which houses the headquarters of both brands, before testing out the water at any of the five major beaches. Point Impossible, Rocky Point, Jan Juc, Point Addis and Bells Beach are great locations for both experienced surfers and those who’ve never worn neoprene.
There’s also plenty to do on dry land – if you’ve brought your children along, the aptly-named Fairy Park is definitely worth a look. Dedicated to the celebration of traditional fairy tales and myths, this awe-inspiring theme park has a range of castles, cottages and caves that are perfect for exploration; your little ones can venture through secret passages, scale precipices and meet characters like Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin. For the adults, there’s a number of adrenalin-filled activities like flying in Tiger Moth aeroplanes, taking the Twelve Apostles Adventure Flight, and doing tandem skydiving above Bells Beach. Afterwards, relax with a trip to the friendly Torquay Bowls Club, or a bottle of shiraz from Brown Magpie Wines.
If you want to explore Torquay’s natural side, the 44-kilometre Surf Coast Walk runs parallel to the ocean, while the Point Danger Marine Sanctuary is the perfect place to go snorkelling and get a glimpse of some incredible marine life. The region’s pleasant weather mean outdoor activities are viable options all year round.
