On the southern shore of Port Stephens lies Shoal Bay, a beautifully-isolated sweep of coast that is renowned for its postcard-worthy aesthetics.  Imagine transparent turquoise waters fringed by pristine beaches, with rugged mountains providing a spectacular backdrop, and you’ll start to get an idea of what you’re in for.  This is the perfect holiday for those who want to experience the full beauty of Australian nature, and has plenty of opportunities for both terrestrial and aquatic adventure.

Tomaree National Park is the town’s largest attraction; it dominates the peninsula, and is threaded with hiking trails that are particularly spectacular in the early morning.  Tomaree Mountain is a bit more challenging, but there’s guided tours which will allow you to climb the summit and experience the area’s truly magical vistas.  If you’re wanting to cool off, Shoal Bay Beach and Jimmys Beach are both great for swimming, while Box Beach and Zenith Beach have rougher swells that better accommodate surfers.  During whale-watching season, head down to Wreck Beach, and catch a glimpse of the magnificent animals as they swim past the headland.

Inland, you can hike and picnic at Barry Park, before exploring Shoal Bay’s history with a trip to Nelson Head Lighthouse Reserve Museum; it also has a café with great food, so don’t worry about getting hungry.  Nelson Bay Lighthouse (next door) is equally awesome – take a tour of an 1875 lighthouse keeper’s cottage.  When you go searching for dinner, check out Catch at Shoal Bay for some authentic Aussie fish ‘n’ chips, or stop by Gianni’s for some delicious Italian.  If you’re a seafood lover, try the Little Beach Boathouse, which offers upscale a la carte seafood with beautiful views of Shoal Bay.
