Culturally enriched and beautifully spacious, Perth is a city built to cleanse the metaphorical palate and provide vacationers with a refreshing seaside experience.  Sprawling on Australia’s western coastline, it’s a foodie paradise, with food and wine flooding in from the nearby Margaret River region; better yet, it’s got fantastic beaches, with certain areas boasting fantastic surf.  If you’re after a relaxing getaway with all the comforts of a proper city, Perth should be your next holiday destination.

A good way to start getting in touch with the city is by checking out all the biggest landmarks, like the Perth Bell Tower.  Eighteen medieval bells hang in a glass-and-copper campanile; the tower stretches 82.5 metres high, and is lit up at night with a display of internal lights.  The Fremantle Prison (former, not current), the Perth Mint and Kings Park are also fantastic sites that encapsulate the Perth spirit.  The Mint, in particular, is great for families, with history displays, guided tours and batches of newly-minted coins that make awesome souvenirs.

It wouldn’t be right to visit Western Australia and not hit the beaches, so make sure you bring thongs, swimmers and sunscreen, because places like Cottesloe and Leighton are guaranteed to have great swells.  Nearby Rottnest Island also has amazing swimming spots, but it’s famous as a residence for the quokka, a tiny, adorable marsupial that looks like a cross between a wallaby and a mouse.  Alternatively, urbanites can explore the city streets with walking tours that range from celebrations of street art to restaurant-crawls that will leave you craving more.

The proximity of the Margaret River means that your Perth holiday will have an array of fresh produce and world-class wines.  Whether you’re after a nice red to go with some winter comfort food, or a refreshing white to complement Perth’s incredible seafood options, you won’t be left disappointed.  Alternatively, if you like hunting for your food, there’s a nice array of markets which allow you to connect with the local vibe – our recommendations are Perth City Farmers’ Market and Perth Upmarket.
