Mount Fuji needs no introduction. The spiritual and geographical nexus of Yamanashi, it’s been a deeply sacred site for decades, and is a Japanese icon. If you’re enjoying a Yamanashi holiday, or visiting Japan generally, climbing Fuji should be at the top of your itinerary. The climbing season ranges from mid/late June to about mid-September; outside this period, extreme weather conditions and heavy snow mean you won’t be able to hike. The Fuji-climbing peak season stretches from the end of July to the end of August (Japanese school holidays), and culminates in the Obon Week (mid August), which should be avoided due to its massive congestion.
