The third-highest lake in Japan, Yamanaka is also the largest of the Five Lakes. With boating, fishing, water skiing and other aquatic activities on offer, it’s a lovely spot to visit from spring to autumn, although the summer school holidays (end of July to end of August) should be avoided unless you’re looking to compete with hundreds of students for space. Check out onsen like Benifuji no Yu, take in beautiful vistas from the Panorama Dai lookout, or explore the lake’s shores with hiking trails like the Mt. Ohira Hiking Course.
