909 Oyamachi, Utsunomiya, Tochigi 321-0345, Japan
If you get tired of exploring Utsunomiya’s incredible gyoza scene, check out the Oya History Museum. The museum has been built on the site of a former stone quarry; these extensive mines were first developed during the Edo Period as a way to extract oya stone, and remained in use until 1986. Although the museum itself is fascinating – it features period artefacts and showcases oya samples – it’s the 20,000 square metres of underground mines that are truly incredible. The expansive stone halls are illuminated with coloured lights, providing visitors with a slightly surreal experience. If you’re a photographer, this is definitely not one to miss.
