Part of the Hakone caldera, Mount Ashigara is one of Shizuoka’s most northern peaks. It’s famous as the birthplace of legendary folk hero Kintarō, a child with superhuman strength, and the mountain features a shrine dedicated to him, as well as a giant boulder that was allegedly split in two by his axe. Ashigara has great hiking trails, which become particularly lovely in autumn; ascending to the summit takes about 75 minutes, and requires a moderate level of fitness.
