Miho, Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka, 424-0901, Japan
Miho no Matsubara is arguably Shizuoka’s most famous beach. Stretching for 7 kilometres (4.3 miles), its black-grained sands and evergreen thickets have captured the Japanese imagination for centuries. It has featured in a number of poems and stories, with the most prominent being Hagoromo, a traditional rendition of the swan maiden story. Mount Fuji is clearly visible along the entire beach, and recent upgrades have made it possible to cycle around the Miho peninsula, so it’s perfect for a family daytrip.
