Based in Shizuoka city, the Kunōzan Tōshō-gū is an elaborate Shinto shrine that dates back to 1617. It is the burial place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, a 1600s shōgun who founded one of Japan’s most important dynasties; according to Shinto tradition, the shrine is dedicated to his deified spirit. Visitors can enter the shrine via a steep, stone staircase, or using a ropeway from the Nihondaira plateau.
