1-1 Miyacho, Fujinomiya, Shizuoka 418-0067, Japan
Allegedly built to placate the volcanic fury of Mount Fuji, Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha is located in the city of Fujinomiya, and is a must-see if you’re interested in traditional Japanese culture. The temple proper is preceded by a titanic torii gate, followed by a second, more elaborate gate called romon. Visitors can explore the temple’s red-painted exterior, or enter the main hall to pray. The on-site Wakutama Pond is also worth checking out – traditionally, it was used by pilgrims climbing Fuji for ablutionary cleansings prior to their ascent.
