吾妻-2159-2 南木曽町 Nagiso, Kiso District, Nagano 399-5302, Japan
Tsumago-juku is one of Nagano’s most fascinating attractions. While it’s still a fully-functioning town, its Edo Period ambience has been painstakingly preserved. Cars are banned from the main street, and electricity lines are kept hidden – with the town’s timber buildings cradled by forested mountains, it’s easy to imagine you’ve slipped back to an earlier, slower time. Visitors can explore a range of perfectly-preserved buildings, like the Honjin, Wakihonjin and Kotoku Temple. We recommend dining in a traditional restaurant to get the complete Tsumago experience – Yoshimuraya, a soba noodle joint, is a particularly lovely eatery.
