479-11 Matsushiromachi, Nagano, 381-1232, Japan
The Matsushiro Underground Imperial Headquarters were built as a bunker of Japanese officials during the Second World War. Constructed by thousands of Korean slave labourers, the headquarters extended deep beneath the mountains near Matsushiro, and were designed to resist heavy bombing. Today, parts of the complex are open to visitors, and a nearby history museum offers insight into the lives of the Korean captives.
