Matsumoto Castle

4-1 Marunouchi, Matsumoto, Nagano 390-0873, Japan

Nicknamed ‘the Crow Castle’ for its forbidding, black-hued façade, Matsumoto Castle is Nagano’s most famous fortress.  As a hirajiro – a castle built on flat land, rather than a mountaintop – Matsumoto’s builders protected it from attack by installing a deep moat only passable via narrow stone walkways.  This, in combination with a sturdy design, has allowed Matsumoto to remain intact from its construction in the sixteenth century to the modern day.  Visitors can explore the castle’s original wooden halls, many of which feature displays of authentic samurai weaponry.  During spring, the somei yoshino trees that line the moat explode into blossom – perfect for a stunningly Japanese photo.
