410-4 Yamanaka Shinden, Mishima, Shizuoka 411-0011, Japan
Although the building itself was destroyed during Japan’s Edo period, Yamanaka Castle’s earthworks survived and have become a popular tourist attraction. As a sengoku-period castle, Yamanaka’s defences utilise the existing landscape to make it difficult for attackers – visitors can explore geometric shojibori moats and see where the keep and bailey originally sat. On clear days, views of Mount Fuji are possible.
