The Daibutsu, or ‘Great Buddha’, is one of Japan’s most famous monuments. Seated on a stone circle, this hollow bronze statue of Amitābha guards the entrance to Kōtoku-in, one of Kamakura’s Jōdo-shū Buddhist temples. It was cast around 1252, making it an incredibly important remnant of medieval Japan. Today, visitors can view the Great Buddha’s interior, or bypass it and pay their respects at the temple proper.
