Ōwakudani

125-1 Sengokuhara, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun

A hotbed of geothermal activity, Ōwakudani is one of Hakone’s most unique attractions.  This volcanic zone was created by Mount Hakone’s last eruption, and features steam vents and sulphurous pools scattered across the mountainside.  On-site vendors sell sulphur-blackened eggs, cooked in the pools, which are said to enhance longevity.  The area is accessible via the Hakone Ropeway, but, prior to visiting, we recommend checking whether Ōwakudani is open; occasionally, due to volcanic activity, it’s closed by authorities as a precaution.
