Hakone Tozan Railway

If you think of ‘train’ and ‘Japan’ and imagine a shinkansen, try again.  The Hakone Tozan Railway is high in the mountains, which means quaint little carriages designed for crossing ravines and ascending high slopes.  Although it does serve a functional purpose, the Hakone-Yumoto to Gora line is a spectacular journey, and perfect for tourists wanting to see the best of Kanagawa’s high country.  A one-way trip takes about 35 minutes, and you can expect to travel through woodland, across gorges and past flowering ajisai.  At Gora, you can turn around and head back, or continue via cable-car to Lake Ashi.
