1-1 Tomioka, Gunma 370-2316, Japan
Tomioka Silk Mill holds the title of Japan’s oldest modern silk reeling factory, with an establishment date of 1872. Located in Tomioka, its massive brick buildings are filled with still-intact reeling equipment and storage facilities for silk worm eggs. The main silk reeling hall and on of the silk worm warehouses can be explored via tour or audio guide, while others, like the Brunat House, can only be viewed from the outside. The Tomioka Silk Mill was one of the building blocks of modern Japan, and is definitely worth a day-trip to Tomioka.
