Kusatsu, Gunma, Japan
As a prefecture renowned for its fresh produce, we definitely recommend trying Gunma’s local cuisine. In Kusatsu, Matsumura Manju offers its excellent manjū (a type of Japanese dessert), along with savoury dishes like soba, tempura and sashimi – for something a little unusual, try the horse sashimi. The Matsuba Tavern (居酒屋松葉), also in Kusatsu, has one of the best traditional izakaya experiences around. Snack on its line-up of small menu items while relaxing and enjoying cups of sake, and soak up the informal atmosphere. Finally, Matsumoto (まつもと), a casual udon noodle restaurant, sits along Sainokawara Street, and is the perfect way to finish up a day of hard hiking and onsen bathing.
