Mount Kusatsu-Shirane

Towering above the Kusatsu township and its nearby onsen, Mount Kusatsu-Shirane is a forbidding sight.  Although its lower slopes are heavily forested and threaded with walking trails, the mountain’s summit is bare, dominated by pyroclastic cones and bright-green crater lakes.  Its status as an active volcano means that summit closures are fairly common, so check with local authorities prior to hiking.  Even if you can’t get a look at the acidic waters of Yu-gama, hiking on the lower slopes will still get you great views of Kusatsu and the surrounding area.
