Kusatsu Onsen is Gunma’s most popular set of hot springs, and is a must-do for anyone touring the prefecture. The onsen and the surrounding town are huddled at the base of the volcanic Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, about 1,200 metres (3,937 feet) above sea level; as a result, this quaint destination experiences freezing winters best enjoyed by lounging in the steaming hot-pools. There are 13 different public baths scattered across the township, including Goza-no-yu and Otaki-no-yu. In lieu of a traditional town square, you’ll find the Yubatake, or ‘hot water field’, which uses pine channelling to help cool down the scalding volcanic water. If you’re looking for the ultimate onsen experience, Kusatsu is the place for you.
