During the Edo period, travel restrictions and increased political structuring led to the rise of ‘postal towns’, which sprang up along highways and functioned like medieval pit-stops. Ōuchi-juku, about an hour’s drive from Fukushima city, is one of the best-preserved examples. Its main street is lined with original, thatched-roof buildings that have since been converted into shops, eateries and minshuku inns.
