Yamamoto Ouchi, Shimogo, Minamiaizu District, Fukushima 969-5207, Japan
During the Edo period, travel restrictions and increased political structuring led to the rise of ‘postal towns’, which sprang up along highways and functioned like medieval pit-stops. Ōuchi-juku, about an hour’s drive from Fukushima city, is one of the best-preserved examples. Its main street is lined with original, thatched-roof buildings that have since been converted into shops, eateries and minshuku inns. All electricity and phone lines are concealed, so you’ll be able to enjoy the village’s authentic feel.
