Kakunai, Nihommatsu, Fukushima 964-0904, Japan
Located about 10 minutes from central Nihonmatsu, Nihonmatsu Castle originally held great strategic importance; its position along the route from Tokyo to Honshū’s north meant it was valuable for Japan’s various feudal rulers. It was mostly destroyed during the Boshin War, but its main gate, a yagura turret and part of its main keep were restored during the ’90s. Now, visitors can explore both the reconstructed areas and its well-maintained grounds, which are renowned for their beautiful sakura blossoms during spring.
