WWII Oil Storage Tunnels

Darwin Waterfront, Kitchener Dr, Darwin City NT 0800

Built during the height of the Second World War, the tunnels are concrete-paneled storage units designed to keep Darwin’s oil supply safe from Japanese bombers.  Ironically, by the time they were completed, the threat of bombing had evaporated, leaving Darwin with a catacomb of virtually unused passageways.  Today, they’ve been converted into a somber homage to the heroes and victims of the War; the dimly-lit corridors house interactive displays, images and infographics which detail the Bombing of Darwin and other significant wartime events.  They’re the perfect way to escape Darwin’s brutal summer heat, and are great for kids, history buffs and those who want to pay homage to the victims of the War.
