Omaha Beach

The D-Day landings marked one of the bloodiest periods of the Second World War – the ensuing Battle of Normandy saw just under half a million Allied and German troops killed or missing.  Omaha Beach, an 8 kilometre (5 mile) stretch of beach between Sainte-Honorine-des-Pertes and Vierville-sur-Mer, was one of the five invasion points for Allied troops, and was subject to days of intense combat as American soldiers struggled to secure a beachhead.  Today, visitors can see surviving German bunkers, and pay their respects to the fallen at the Musée Mémorial d’Omaha Beach and the Les Braves sculpture.
