50170 Mont Saint-Michel, France
One of France’s most-visited historic sites, Mont Saint Michel Abbey crowns Le Mont-Saint-Michel, a tiny town/island just a few hundred meters off the French coast. During low tide, the island becomes surrounded by vast stretches of sand and mud, passable via a single raised causeway. This natural defence system meant that, historically, attackers had virtually no chance of conquering it. Following the French Revolution, the Abbey was turned into a prison, but, by 1874, it had been declared a historic monument. Today, visitors can visit this incredible French icon by purchasing tickets.
