Tateyama Castle

351-2 Tateyama, Chiba 294-0036, Japan

Designed to safeguard the Tokyo Bay from invaders, Tateyama Castle was first constructed in 1580.  Although it fell into disrepair after its daimyō’s death in 1614, a replica was built during the 1980s using traditional techniques.  Now, tourists can explore its interior, which features exhibits based on the stories of Edo novelist Takizawa Bakin.  The nearby Hakkenden Museum has a range of samurai swords and armour on display, while the surrounding Shiroyama Park is popular for sakura-viewing and bird-watching.
