Niemon Island is a place rich in local history. According to legend, it was the refuge for a defeated shōgun, and also hosted Nichiren, founder of Japan’s Nichiren Buddhism. To access the island, you’ll have to catch a ferry, which is approximately 12 minutes’ walk from Futomi Station. Once there, you can explore the island’s rugged shoreline, and venture into its numerous seaside caves. Also of interest are a Haiku monument inscribed with poems detailing the island’s beauty, and an 800-year-old residence of the island’s first owner, Hirano Niemon.
