1697-1 Katori, Chiba 287-0017, Japan
Katori Shrine, is a Shintō shrine in Katori. Originally built in 643, this ancient site is the head shrine of over 400 smaller Katori shrines around Japan. For those used to the red paint and lacquer of other Shintō shrines, its black-and-gold colour scheme is refreshingly unique. Visitors can explore both the prayer hall and the main hall; if you’ve brought your camera, getting some photos in front of the titanic Romon Gate is definitely a must.
