26-2 Momoyamacho, Atami, Shizuoka 413-8511, Japan
Japan’s rich history has enthralled tourists for decades, but its contemporary art scene is just as interesting, and definitely worth a few hours of your holiday time. The MOA Museum of Art celebrates artists new and old, with exhibitions and events that range from painting displays to Noh music performances. Its in-house collection mostly features antiques – you can see traditional paintings, Buddhist icons, pearl-inlaid boxes and fragments of ancient poems. Break up the browsing with a stop at any of the Museum’s five eateries – French-Japanese fusion Au Mirador, traditional lunch/dessert joint Hana-no-chaya, a Western-style café, the Ippaku-an teahouse, and soba spot Nijo-shinmachi Sobanobou.
