In Kusatsu, Matsumura Manju offers its excellent manjū (a type of Japanese dessert), along with savoury dishes like soba, tempura and sashimi – for something a little unusual, try the horse sashimi. The Matsuba Tavern (居酒屋松葉), also in Kusatsu, has one of the best traditional izakaya experiences around. Snack on its line-up of small menu items while relaxing and enjoying cups of sake, and soak up the informal atmosphere. Finally, Matsumoto (まつもと), a casual udon noodle restaurant, sits along Sainokawara Street, and is the perfect way to finish up a day of hard hiking and onsen bathing.
