Japan, 〒381-0401 Nagano, Shimotakai District, Yamanochi, Hirao, 6845
A trip to Nagano wouldn’t be complete without visiting the prefecture’s most beloved denizens – the snow monkeys of Jigokudani. At about 850 metres (2788 feet) above sea level, Jigokudani is freezing. It’s covered with snow for about a third of the year, and dressing warmly is a must. The Japanese macaques who live there spend a lot of their time soaking in the area’s hot springs; you can visit them via a short hike. Due to the site’s crowded parking, we recommend taking public transport, particularly during peak season (winter).
