1050 Joan Crescent, Victoria, BC V8S 3L5, Canada
This titanic mansion, or ‘bonanza castle, was the legacy of coal baron Robert Dunsmuir, who earned a fortune from Vancouver Island coal. As one of the best extant examples of Victorian architecture, this incredible building is a must-see for tourists – not only is it structurally well-preserved, the castle’s caretakers have also gone to great lengths to restore the original décor and exterior grounds, resulting in a breathtakingly authentic experience. Learn about both the Victorian age and the Dunsmuir family with a self-guided audio tour, and try British cuisine at the on-site Jinglepot Teahouse.
